Our family travel series continues with Valley-based boy mom and lifestyle contributor Nadine Bubeck (aka Mama B.). Every month, Nadine showcases a fabulous destination- providing five reasons to visit the hot spot.
This month, we’re doing something different. Craving an adult only night? My husband and I took the plunge and ditched the kids for a less than 24-hour escape… I was nervous, but it was well worth it. Here’s how to do that first kid-free staycation with ease.
Where to stay:
I have three kids under 5, and frankly, I don’t like leaving them. However, my husband’s been begging me to do a kids free overnight, so I finally caved in… and glad I did.
Since I didn’t want to feel too far away, we ventured someplace fab in our neighborhood, the fantastic Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch.
The property is grandiose, spacious, tasteful and modern. The grounds are lush and beautiful. Boasting a huge indoor/outdoor opening, the property features live music on a regular basis- a great opportunity to sit back and relax.
The resort’s water playground features 10 swimming pools, 20 fountains, 45 waterfalls, and a waterslide. There’s also a beach pool with sand and play-toys… it’s awesome.
Where to play
While it was our first night away from the kids, we hung with them during the day. It’s actually a good idea if you’re doing a staycation.
We checked in early and brought the kids to the pool (half with the hopes we’d tire them out for the sitter). My oldest when down the waterslide 50 times (and I did too!), while the others played endlessly in the sanded beach area.
After bringing them home to the sitter (and bidding our final farewell), we went back to the hotel and started with an in-room drink (I needed it). The rooms are oversized and plush, equipped with a balcony. After, we had quite an interesting dining experience (I’ll get to that later), followed by a gondola ride. For a few extra bucks, couples can charter a private gondola boat while being serenaded by a singing driver. Corny, yes, …but overly romantic and lovely.
Our evening ended at the bar playing Gin Rummy. I highly suggest doing something playful when escaping the kids… something that keeps you busy and smiling… and for us, that’s playing cards. By the time our private tournament was over, I nearly passed out, only waking a few times to text our babysitter.
Where to feast:
The property flaunts a super cool dining experience: Wine Me Dine Me at the SWB, a southwest bistro demonstration kitchen. It’s a fun culinary journey with the Chef; he customizes your 4 course dinner and it’s paired with tequila and wine. We had an assortment of scallops, steak, pesto and cheesecake. Plus, I even took the shots of tequila.
What to bring:
Yourself. When it comes to staycations, don’t over-pack. Keep it simple. Maybe just a deck of cards…
