Our family travel series continues with Valley-based boy mom and lifestyle contributor Nadine Bubeck (aka Mama B.). Every month, Nadine showcases a fabulous destination- providing five reasons to visit the hot spot.
Where to stay:
Located in the heart of Manhattan Beach, The Shade Hotel is a boutique hub ideal for staying, playing, dining, or even getting hitched (had to throw that in). While it’s totally chic, there’s still a homey, inviting feel to this property; your kids will surely sleep like A-listers. The deluxe rooms flaunt a Jacuzzi tub that lights, admittedly making the boys party in the bath for hours. There’s also a daybed to accommodate your entourage and plush accommodations for mom + dad’s good night sleep.
Property features include: a free, fabulous buffet breakfast AND a rooftop lounge pool with comfy seating for sunbathing.
The hotel sits amidst the area’s promenade flaunting a fountain for playing, restaurants, and a farmer’s market (we’ll get to that later). It’s an easy walk to shops and a few blocks to the beach. On a personal note, I left wanting to move to Manhattan Beach. I’ve never seen such a hip town that encumbers such character, class, and comfortability.
Where to play
As mentioned, the hotel is located in the town’s promenade. My kids spent HOURS- no joke- playing in the splash pad like fountain. Surrounded by tables and chairs for us parents to relax, the boys had a blast and we got some downtime.
The Farmer’s Market, occurring every Tuesday, is truly the best. Enjoy 50+ vendors, a train that runs ALL DAY, face painting, balloon making, and live music. I had no idea so many young families lived in the area… it was kid central, a total blast, and for budget-seekers, didn’t cost much to enjoy the amenities.
Obviously the area is known for the beach, and rightfully so. It’s stunning. Clean. And your kiddos will play in the sand for hours.
There’s also a lovely walking path… you can make your way to Hermosa drooling over the beach-front properties. And if you’re a 30-something like myself and formerly “90210”-obsessed, make your way to the blue “90210 house”… come on, you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.
But no matter what, make sure you’re on the pier at sunset. Just take my word.
Where to feast:
Rock’N Fish rocks. This happening hot spot will satisfy your seafood cravings (along with a gifting your kids a great kid’s menu). The creamed corn is AMAZING, and you can’t beat the bustling atmosphere.
What to bring:
Beach toys. And if you don’t have them, there are plenty of places where you can buy them. The hotel offers complimentary cruiser bikes, so arrive prepped to cruise!
Shop specials! The hotel is known for offering a generous rate for staying longer. Obviously do what you can to work around peak season and peak prices.
