Mama B’s Travel Tips: San Diego

Our family travel series continues with Valley-based boy mom and lifestyle contributor Nadine Bubeck (aka Mama B.). Every month, Nadine will showcase a fabulous destination- providing five reasons to visit the hot spot: where to stay, where to play and beyond.

This month, we’re visiting San Diego, a summer retreat for many Arizonans. While you’re likely familiar with the area, bet you don’t know where to find the best fish tacos EVER…

Where to stay:

Located on the waterfront, the Hyatt Mission Bay is an awesome resort boasting rooms with ocean views. The spacious suites feature plush accommodations, including modern bathrooms and roomy patios. But the best part of all: the pools.

The three pools are perfect for kids, featuring two waterslides and a shallow area for little ones. (My 4-year old went down the bid kid waterslide literally 25 times… in a row.) Take advantage of poolside service- eating and drinking galore while the kids splash around. There’s also a health club and marina offering jet skis, sailboats, whale excursions and more.

The location is perfect- about a 10-minute walk to the beach or bay. You can also utilize the weekend water taxi transporting your family from the hotel to Mission Beach.

Where to play

I’ll first state the obvious: the beach. And if you’re staying at the Hyatt Mission Bay, the beach is super close. But if you have younger kids, you might want to pitch a tent at the bay (across the street from the resort). I love anything that’s free, entertaining, and fun for the whole family… so walk along the bayside path- you’ll pass a number of cool houses, and eventually round the bend to a local hot spot: an on-the-sand playground. This will keep your kids happy for hours.

Also nearby:

  • SeaWorld: Did you know there’s a bunch of Sesame Street rides and attractions, in addition to a brand new roller coaster? (5-minute drive from the Hyatt)
  • Balboa Park: Stunning grounds and plenty of kid-friendly museums. (10-minute drive from the Hyatt)
  • Downtown San Diego: Dine in Little Italy, check out the Harbor splash pad, walk Seaport Village, catch a Padres game… downtown San Diego has so much to offer! (10-minute drive from the Hyatt)

Where to feast:

Two words: World Famous. The Pacific Beach eatery is a San Diego classic- and I crave the fish tacos all year round (get ‘em fried). Sit in the happy hour area for a la carte tacos all day and night, while overlooking Mission Beach. (I love a good view.) And the best part: the mac and cheese is fantastic- a hit for pitcky eaters.

What to bring:

May grey; June gloom… Always prep for overcast skies. You might wake up wearing sweats and end the day in a bikini- you simply never know. Pack comfy and practical for all weather conditions.

Don’t forget:

Make reservations and buy tickets early! Summer is crazy busy in San Diego, so book dinner plans and purchase amusement park tickets online. Also, shop deals, specials, and seasonal promotions to save $$$.
