Press Coffee Roasters has become a signature coffee hot spot in the valley. Recognized for their unique attributes and quality coffees, Press Coffee has warmed its way into hearts and cups throughout Arizona and beyond.
Press Coffee is a local coffee company with 7 locations. Press takes pride in the unique experiences they provide to their customers and the quality of their coffee products, imported from countries around the world.
Owners Steve Kraus and his wife, Tram Mai, steamrolled a dream into reality when they opened their first shop.
“It started as a college dream of mine at UCLA,” Tram said. “I was always in coffee houses around town. I just loved the atmosphere; it was intoxicating. Aside from my dream of being a broadcaster (Catch her on 12 News Arizona), I always wanted to own a coffee shop.”
Along came Steve Kraus. They met in 2002 when Steve was working in telecom sales and married in 2008. Steve’s dream was to own his own business. So they put the two together and decided to open their own coffee shop.
“We made both our dreams come true and we really have a love affair with coffee,” Tram said. Steve was an entrepreneur who didn’t know much about coffee to start, but he learned the craft and the business and created something special.
Just after they married, they opened their first location on High Street at Desert Ridge during the recession of 2008. A few years went by and they were struggling, but bought another location at the Scottsdale Quarter to boost business. Since then, the company boomed and they now have coffee shops in Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler and another opening soon at the Scottsdale Waterfront.
They also have plans to open a new roastery in North Phoenix that will service as a full production location for coffee roasting and training. It will also be open to the public as a coffee shop with the ability to watch the coffee production in action.
Yes, customers can visit any one of their locations for a hip coffee shop experience and great cups of coffee, but Press gives their customers so much more. With options to shop online, their website features the ability for customers to select from various regions and grinds and purchase to have it shipped anywhere in the world. Press also offers a unique coffee subscription service for those extreme coffee lovers, where customers can sign up for bi-weekly deliveries of their favorite coffee right to their home!
Also available for sale besides coffee, customers can find brand merchandise and brewing products to home brew like the pros!
Press offers a wonderful tool online as well, to focus on not only satisfying customers but educating them, as well. Step by step coffee brewing guides can be found on their website for those who want to learn to brew.
“We feel strongly about educating the public on specialty coffee,” said Steve. “We don’t want customers to feel intimidated. We want to provide a comfortable atmosphere for them to enjoy and relax, and also provide opportunities for them to learn more about this craft that they love.”
This leads us to their coffee classes! That’s right – Press offers Coffee 101, a special tasting experience called cupping, where customers can taste various different coffee flavors. This is modeled after a wine tasting, but with Press, you get to use your own cups, rather than sharing. Coffee cupping works with flavor profiles, like wine does. Customers will learn where the coffee grows and how to brew it.
“Customers will learn so much,” said Steve of the education they offer. “We believe that customers will appreciate the coffee so much more if they learn about it.”
Press also participates in charity work with their program, Press on Charities. Along with Press co-owners Alex Mason and Jason Kyle, Press gives back to the community through various charity events. So far, Press has raised funds for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and for the Phoenix Zoo’s efforts towards jaguar conservation research in Costa Rica.
“My partners have guided me to see things in ways I’ve never imagined. I can’t thank my team enough and I can’t take all the credit,” said Steve. “I’m just so grateful to see how far we’ve come. It sends tingles up my spine to know that we are recognized in the community and have created a strong brand that people love. We are so humbled, to say the least.” www.presscoffee.com
