October is breast cancer awareness month, and for me, it means a lot more to me. The words “breast cancer” has a very personal connotation for me, as it undoubtedly does for many people. In June 2017, I received news of my ultrasound and biopsy results and told at 40 years old I had breast cancer. Luckily, it was caught early, Stage 1, and, thanks to surgery, medication, and radiation, I am happy to say “I am a breast cancer survivor.”
Breast Health Care
Thankfully, women in Arizona diagnosed with breast cancer will continue to have community resources and support. After Susan G. Komen of Arizona closed their doors on July 31, the local breast cancer non-profit, Don’t Be A Chump! Check For A Lump! has stepped up to fill the void left by Komen.
Don’t Be A Chump! Check For A Lump! was created by Phoenix resident Holly Rose after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. Holly endured months of surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. During that time, Holly and her family were showered with kindness and compassion by folks in the community. Grateful for every act of kindness, she founded Don’t Be A Chump! Check For A Lump! as a way to give back to the community.
The non-profit serves as a resource for women diagnosed with breast cancer, motivate more women to perform breast self-exams with the hope of detecting breast cancer in the early stages, plus teach them how to prevent it. Don’t Be A Chump! Check For A Lump! provides information for free mammograms, prevention workshops, survivor luncheons, as well as additional resources.
Wig Out Program
Holly also created the Wig Out program which provides free wigs to women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment in Arizona. The Wig Out program is helping on average one woman a day to get a free wig. To date, she has helped 950 women get free wigs. Most importantly, Don’t Be A Chump! Check For A Lump! ensures that all monetary donations stay right here in Arizona to help local women in the community.
