Let’s be honest: we place a higher value on something we create with our own two hands versus a similar, mass-produced version sold in retail stores. The satisfaction of building something from scratch that is worthy of a place on your wall is a feeling unparalleled, and one that Denise Clark and Kristyn ZumMallen, owners of Board & Brush Creative Studios in Glendale, get to experience every day.
A desire to open their own business and a mutual interest in creative woodwork (Kristyn sells her work on Etsy and Denise builds wood signs and furniture with her husband) brought the two women together in their venture. “When Denise found Board & Brush on Facebook, we knew it was what we were meant to do,” said Kristyn. They opened the doors to their Glendale location of Board & Brush last December, offering customers a variety of do-it-yourself workshops ranging from wood signs for different rooms in the home to monogrammed serving trays, decorative pillows, centerpieces and herb boxes. “Soon we will be offering our American Flag class!”
For $65 per person, customers can attend ‘Pick Your Project’ classes, which are open to everyone, or arrange a private party with the option to reserve a select number of spots or the entire studio. “We also offer team building/corporate events where we create smaller signs at $35,” said Kristyn, “as well as birthday parties for kids and teens, classes just for kids and parent/child workshops.”
Having previously worked in customer service, both Denise and Kristyn apply their skills in training and development when teaching the workshops, guiding their customers through each step of a project. “We offer an instructor-led class and will walk you through distressing, sanding, staining, building and painting,” said Kristyn. Adds Denise, “Instead of teaching customer service, we get to inspire women to be able to use a drill!” At the end of the three-hour workshop, customers leave with their finished masterpiece. “They walk out with signs built with their own hands, and are worthy of their walls or to give as gifts.”
Open just a few short months, Denise and Kristyn have already realized the importance of being available to customers – in the studio or by phone. In addition, being a part of their community, donating to charities and local events and being passionate about their Board & Brush brand have helped them to maintain a favorable customer base. “Make sure every customer leaves wanting to come back!”
