Back to school… via Zoom!
I have to say- as crazy as this year’s going to be, I really want to make the best of it for me and my children. Sure, us parents will be juggling work, homeschool and beyond- but us mamas have a way of figuring it out, and doing so with grace and diligence.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been getting my “classroom” ready. In other words, our playroom now flaunts ABC signs, white boards, art containers and a million workbooks. Here are some practical, fun finds I plan on using as I embark on this homeschool journey- ideal for young elementary-aged children.
Turn any surface into a white board with Writey. In minutes, you can apply your whiteboard to any wall in your home. Scared it will stick forever? Not a fret- it can stick on any smooth surface and be reapplied in endless locations (without leaving a grimy, harmful residue). There are plenty of sizes available… big ones (for Mrs. Mom lessons), or little ones (which you can cut to your desired dimension). In fact, I got some of the small ones, stuck them on a breakfast tray, and my kids use it as a pop-up desk they can write on!
Keep learning comfortable and ergonomic with Gaiam’s Classic Balance Ball® for kids. Encourage your child to learn and practice healthy posture with this fun alternative to a cliché chair. Studies show that as children constantly move their body to maintain their balance on this moving seat, they are able to focus more easily. Recommended for ages 5-8 and strengthens their core muscles. Also available, a Balance Stoolfor kids that helps wigglers burn excess energy. The secure base has an anti-tip technology that keeps kids from falling. And finally, mama needs to take a seat, too. The adjustable Balance Ball Stool fits under desks, improves posture and swivels.
My homeschool classroom is stocked with workbooks spanning reading, writing, math and beyond. However, in addition to the basics, I want to teach my kids other things- fun things I find important… stuff that makes them well rounded, knowledgeable, and stuff that encourages their curiosity and hobbies. I stumbled upon Alphabet Legends books, and they’re super cute. These books are the ABCs of a variety of topics… small blurbs for each letter accompanied by nice illustrations. There are ABCs of sports, musicians, historical icons and beyond. Really cool for story-time…
While many kids aren’t going to school in-person anytime soon, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do back-to-school shopping. If you’re looking for a unique backpack, check out Bixbee- there’s an array of adorable options; like a winged butterfly backpack or a cool rocket-flyer one (matching lunchboxes available). Even if your kid’s not returning in person, you can always “pack” for parent-run fieldtrips or “do lunch” in your backyard. Plus, for every backpack purchased, one backpack filled with supplies is sent to a child in need.
